AMS 40 K-1212 SSI Absolute Encoder Solution (AMS 4K-1212)

A custom compatible encoder solution can be provided for the AMS 40 K-1212 for maintenance, retrofit, replacement, and upgrade projects. Where the installed machine uses a multiturn SSI absolute encoder with terminal-box connection and defined control-side logic, the compatible version can be developed around the original mechanical and electrical arrangement, with a typical production lead time of 30 working days.

Technical Overview of the AMS 40 K-1212 Encoder

The AMS 40 K-1212 is a multiturn absolute encoder designed for rotary motion measurement in industrial drive and shaft-feedback applications. In the coding structure of the latest AMS 40 / ASS 40 manual, AM identifies the multiturn version, S indicates the SSI interface, and K denotes a terminal box connection arrangement. The electrical platform supports 12–30 V DC supply, SSI communication, binary or gray code data format, RS422 / 5 V clock and data interface levels, and a clock frequency range of 80 kHz to 1 MHz.

From the resolution structure, the manual states that the multiturn side of this series supports up to 12 bit, corresponding to a maximum of 4096 revolutions, while the singleturn side supports up to 13 bit. The model code 1212 is therefore consistent with a multiturn SSI configuration combining a 12-bit singleturn value with a 12-bit multiturn range. The same series also includes V/R for selectable counting direction, Z input for presetting the current position to zero, and a status output with HTL level.

Industrial Integration Considerations

For this model, the main integration checkpoint is SSI-side compatibility across both the singleturn and multiturn data structure. During retrofit work, the controller should be checked for SSI timing acceptance, word length, binary or gray-code handling, and the use of external control signals such as direction selection or preset input. Since the platform uses RS422 / 5 V clock and data levels, signal compatibility at the receiving side should be confirmed before installation.

Mechanical and environmental conditions should also be reviewed in advance. The manual specifies a standard shaft dimension of 11j6 × 30 mm, with 14j6 × 30 mm available as an option, and lists an operating temperature range of -25 °C to +85 °C, with different limits under UL / CSA conditions. It also shows protection classes up to IP66 and IP66/IP67 depending on the sealing arrangement, and notes that permissible speed changes with the chosen seal design. These factors are important when the encoder is installed in harsh areas or where sealing selection affects long-term operating stability.

Custom Compatible Encoder Solution

For the AMS 40 K-1212, a custom compatible encoder solution can be engineered to match the original SSI communication structure, multiturn data arrangement, terminal-box layout, and shaft-side installation logic as closely as possible. The compatible version can be configured around the required 12-bit singleturn + 12-bit multiturn structure, data format, electrical interface, control-signal handling, and sealing condition so that machine modification remains limited during replacement or upgrade work.

This approach is especially useful where the installed system already depends on SSI-based absolute position feedback over multiple revolutions and where the machine owner wants to preserve the established control architecture. In those situations, the objective is not only dimensional compatibility, but also continuity in data behavior, preset logic, direction handling, and field wiring.

Lead Time and Custom Development

Typical production lead time: 30 working days.

Before production, the engineering review should confirm the required multiturn resolution structure, SSI data format, clock range, terminal-box arrangement, shaft dimensions, mounting conditions, sealing requirements, and controller-side decoding expectations. The actual use of V/R, Z, and status signals should also be verified in advance so the compatible solution can be matched to the installed machine logic.
